The future of the Giving Garden sweet corn crop was looking
bleak until the Summer Stretch volunteers arrived.
When we planted in late May, the soil was very wet. As the soil dried in
the sun, it became dry, hard and compacted making it very difficult
for the corn to germinate and push its way out of the
soil. The problem was compounded since sweet corn takes
about 80 to 90 days to mature - we were at the end of the planting
season.
The decision was made to replant NOW! Our volunteers turned
over and loosened the soil with hoes and rakes re-creating a nice seed
bed. Fifteen rows of sweet corn were cultivated and replanted in
less than 2 hours!
That work followed by the gentle rains
on Thursday should give the new plantings a jump start. Thank you,
Summer Stretch volunteers!
